Liposuction Treatment – Types, Side Effects and Effectiveness

Liposuction is done to remove deposited fat from the body through suction. Thin, tiny, blunt-tipped cannula tubes are put into the skin through tiny cuts during liposuction treatment. It sucks out the fat through these tubes which are moved around to address the specific fat deposits. Liposuction is safer, less painful and easier with improved techniques in recent years. Here are some of the latest techniques of this fat reduction surgery

  • Ultrasound-Assisted Liposuction – Ultrasound is used in this technique to liquefy the fat so it can easily be removed. It may be a very helpful technique to remove fat from the upper abs, neck, back and sides.

  • Laser Liposuction – Low electrical waves are used to liquefy the fat in liposuction by laser. It can be removed with small cannula.

  • Tumescent Liposuction – The area of the body is numbed with a local anesthetic where tube is inserted. Then, a huge amount of anesthetic liquid having epinephrine and lidocaine is injected into the tissue before starting liposuction. But tumescent liposuction doesn’t need to use general anesthesia due to which you may sleep with the procedure.

Basically, liposuction can be conducted as an outpatient procedure in a hospital or in a well-equipped clinic. Generally, you don’t have to stay at the hospital overnight unless huge volume of fat is removed. In some cases, local anesthesia is used. You may or may not get a sedative for relaxation. When it comes to treat a large volume or area, deep sedation or general anesthesia may be used.

Side Effects

Basically, this weight loss treatment is conducted by the skilled specialists in a well-equipped facility and it is safe. By treating more than one area or a large area, the risk of complications can be increased during or after treatment. Here are some of the common side effects –

  • Minor scarring or irritation around the areas where tubes were inserted.

  • Bruising, swelling, numbness, and soreness around the cured areas for a while.

  • Rippling or buggy skin which will retract and tighten after a couple of months. Skin may remain loose in some people.

Here are some of the rare side effects –

  • Uneven skin surface over the cured area

  • Skin color may change permanently

  • Damage to the skin and nerves. In ultrasound liposuction, the heat generated may damage the skin tissue or burn the skin.

If you put on weight after liposuction, your body may accumulate new fat in another place than where fat cells had been removed. New fat is likely to grow up deeply in the body around the liver or heart. This type of fat might do more harm than good to your body than the one stored around the body area, such as your thighs or hips. So, people should be careful and avoid gaining additional weight after liposuction.

How Effective It Is?

Usually, liposuction is very effective in the removal of fat deposits in areas. After liposuction, if you put on weight, fatty bulges removed may come back or appear at any other place.
